What can I make with Makedo?

As with most craft activities, there is a little bit of mess when working with cardboard. The amount of mess that results from a Makedo session does depend on how much cutting is done with the Safe-Saw.

The amount of mess that results from a Makedo session does depend on how much cutting is done with the Safe-Saw. You can expect the working area to have a scattering of small fragments of cardboard, but the Safe-Saw does not reduce cardboard to a fine dust. It does not become dusty or messy, as would happen when using power tools or working with timber.&#xA0;We find that when we do our own making, a quick sweep with a broom or vacuum afterwards is all that is needed.What about environmental dust? At times the source of dust and grime can be from the cardboard itself. Checking that your reclaimed cardboard supply is clean and dust-free before getting started can go a long way in ensuring that everyone enjoys the process. If you&apos;re using boxes that have been at a warehouse, or stored in the attic or basement for years, they may need a wipe-down before being handed over to the kids ;)Why doesn&apos;t the Safe-saw cut cleanly or neatly? One of the key features of the Safe-Saw is that the cut edges are a bit &apos;fuzzy&apos;. While to some this may look messy, there is a specific intention to&#xA0;reduce the risk of injury that can occur when cardboard is sliced cleanly by a sharper blade. The clean edge from a cutting knife can result in paper cuts, particularly when kids play in (or even wear) their cardboard creations. The micro-tears created by the Makedo Safe-saw are softer, and much less likely to result in skin injuries. There will therefore be a small amount of cardboard fragments from the cutting process with the Makedo Safe-Saw.How to clean up your Safe-Saw cardboard edges To neaten up the cardboard that you have cut using the Safe-Saw, you can pick off some of the jagged pieces of card along the cutting line. This can make a surprising difference to the overall neatness of your creation! We have often seen people question whether creations on our Inspiration Hub were made using the Safe-Saw, because they look so neat. There is no trickery involved - with just a little effort after sawing, your cut lines can become remarkably clean and neat looking... while still remaining as safe as can be.

Tightening onto stiffer materials may damage the Scru - so if you do want to connect plastic sheeting (eg for a window or screen) here are a few tips: <ul id="isPasted"><li style="font-size: 14px;">Cardboard slot or bracket: Add a cardboard frame or corner brackets that can hold the panel in place. This avoids the need to Scru through the harder material. </li><li style="font-size: 14px;">Using a Spin-Hinge: The hinge is designed to support the weight of a cardboard panel, so large plastic sheets could be too heavy. Window sizes up to A3 dimensions should be ok.</li><li style="font-size: 14px;">The Scru connectors need cardboard (or a similar compressible material) to tighten against. Add a layer of cardboard behind as described below:&#xA0;</li></ul>To connect to a harder (plastic) panel or thin sheet to the Spin-Hinge, make a hole in the plastic sheet for the Scru+ to go through that is the same size as the holes in the Spin-Hinge. Then add a layer of cardboard behind (on the back) for the Scru+ to connect to.&#xA0;Tip: Use a Scru+ to ensure there is a strong connection. <ul><li style="font-size: 14px;">Keep in mind that the Makedo connectors are designed for use with cardboard. If you try to connect with the Scru+ directly to a material that is stiffer than cardboard (such as Perspex or acrylic sheet), the thread can break when the Scru+ is tightened. That&apos;s why we are suggesting to make a larger hole for the Scru to go through, and connect to a piece of cardboard on the other side. </li></ul>
